Portraits of Lac Courte Oreilles Elders by Sara Balbin Corridor Gallery In 1978 “The Reserve School” was opened on the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation. The school was dedicated to the bicultural and bilingual education. In an effort to create and preserve a record of the Lac Courte Oreilles elders for future generations, the school administration and the Tribal Governing Board commissioned Sara Balbin to paint a series of portraits of the community’s elders. Since the original commission of 12 portraits, Balbin has completed 32 Lac Courte Oreilles Elder portraits, 12 of which are on loan and on view at the Duluth Art Institute. A companion book to the series has just been published by Holy Cow! Press and expands on the history and oral traditions of the tribe. The Duluth Art Institute is honored to be able to share these works with the Twin Ports Community and celebrate the publishing of a very important cultural resource.
