Fern E. Pachel passed away on Feb. 12, 2014 at Benedictine Health Center.
She was born on Feb. 27, 1917 in Duluth.
Fern worked in a variety of office positions, including many years at Atwood Larson Co. in Minneapolis. Fern and her sister Elsie traveled extensively. She was active in hiking groups in both Duluth and Minneapolis until her late 80s. Fern took great pride in driving her friends to many activities. She especially enjoyed the "Vikings" group at Zion Lutheran Church.
Fern was a longtime member of the Hennepin Methodist Church. She generously supported many organizations such as the Salvation Army and the Courage Center. Fern was the founder of the Pachel Foundation that benefits charitable and arts organizations in Minnesota and northern Wisconsin.
Fern always had a very positive attitude with a good sense of humor. She was well liked by all that knew her. She enjoyed doing puzzles and going to movies and concerts.
Fern was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Mary Pachel, and her sister, Elsie Pachel.
Fern is survived by her good friends Mary Jo and Dennis Gagnon, Jan Biga, Kay Biga and Patrick Spott, Emily, Hal and Leo Spott.
Special thanks to the caregivers at Benedictine Health Center who took such good care of Fern for many years.
CELEBRATION OF LIFE: 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Kitchi Gammi Club. Memorials to the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra are preferred.
