Irvin H. Peter, 90, of Cloquet, passed away peacefully early Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014 at Sunnyside Health Care Center.
Irvin was born Oct. 22, 1923 in Milwaukee, Wis., to Herbert and Alina (Uusitalo) Peter.
In his teens Irvin moved to Michigan's Upper Peninsula. He was a proud "Yooper" and Finlander all his life.
As a young man, Irvin wanted to accomplish three things: travel to Hawaii, travel to the Philippine Islands, and marry a Minnesota farm girl. He achieved the first two wishes through his service in the Army during World War II. On June 22, 1957 he married Jeanne Hanson, a farm girl from Milaca, Minn. They remained happy together for almost 57 years and raised three children. They moved to Cloquet from the Twin Cities in 2001 and their later years have been enriched by friends made at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Friendly Grounds, Perkins, US Bank and many other local businesses.
Irvin was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was an active leader in their service organization in Cloquet, the Cooties. He was an avid model railroader and earned a Master Builder award from the National Model Railroader Association for his detailed and meticulous HO-gauge stick-built buildings.
Irvin is survived by his wife, Jeanne; their children, Carol (Peter) Klitzke of La Crosse, Wis., Janet (Ronald) Poire of Minneapolis and Ken (Mary Beth) Peter of Cloquet; his cousin, Irene Boelke of West Allis, Wis.; four grandchildren, Andrew Klitzke of Pierre, S.D.; David Klitzke (Lauren Klubertanz) of La Crosse; and Alina and Hans Peter of Cloquet.
VISITATION: 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 until the 2 p.m. funeral service in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cloquet, followed with Military Honors presented by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow in the social hall. Interment service will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
