James Edward Conant MD, 72, died Friday Jan. 24, 2014 in Cloquet, Minn.
Jim was born in Wausau, Wis., on Nov. 12, 1941.
He graduated high school from Menominee, Wis., in 1960 as the President of the class he attended college at Michigan State in Lansing and earned a degree in Chemistry, he then graduated from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1968 after graduating he went on to one year of family practice in Northern California, two years in the Army as a Captain and Doctor, one year in Korea and one year surgical residency at UCLA Medical Center. Jim then, attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and Studied one year of Internal Medicine and three years Anesthesia training. Jim then practiced medicine in Logan, Utah at Logan Regional Medicine Center 1976-1982, at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, 1982-1995, was the chief of Anesthesia at St. Mary's in 1990. He then Practiced at Mercy Medical Center in Williston, N.D., 1995-1997, Lakewalk Surgery Center in Duluth, and Fairlight Medical Imaging in Williston, N.D., 2006, retiring in January 2013.
Jim married his first wife Nancy Elliot Conant on Dec. 26, 1964 in Detroit Mich., to this union their son Robert was born on April 29, 1968. July 1st, 1989 married Mary Chartier, separated for time but have been together the last nine years living in Williston N.D. They recently moved to Cloquet. Minn.
Jim was an avid reader and especially enjoyed reading about the Civil War and World War II. He was also an avid bird watcher. He loved to pheasant hunt in western North Dakota with his dogs Felix and Jerry. He thoroughly enjoyed the Art of Medicine and felt fortunate to have graduated from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He and Mary traveled extensively around the globe.
Preceded in death by father, Harry W. Conant; mother, Lucille Fyrnys; nephew, Danny Conant; and sister-in-law, Cheryl Chartier.
Survived by life companion, Mary Chartier, Cloquet, Minn.; former wife, Nancy Conant Los Osos Calif.; son, Robert Lawrence Conant of Rompoc Calif.; sisters Lucy (Tom) Griffiths of Mattawan, Michl, and, Mary Mosqueda of Duluth; brother, Harry A. Conant of East Lansing Mich.; Thorn and Stephanie Chartier of Duluth and their children, Ryan and Jennifer Chartier of Las Vegas, Nev., and their children, Fletcher and Theodore; Dan and Katie Danielson, and children, Chloe, Quinn, and Dru of Cloquet, Minn.; Aaron and Lonquentha Chartier of Germantown, Maryland; Martha Chartier of Duluth; and Faithful dog Jerry.
MEMORIAL MASS: 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 in St. Joseph Catholic Church Williston, N.D. A Mass of Christian Burial later in the spring in Duluth.
