Robert Allan Chesness, 81, of Grand Rapids, Minn., passed away Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014 at his home after a brief struggle with cancer.
Bob was born on Feb. 10, 1932 in Willmar, Minn. He was the son of Carl and Esther (Christianson) Chesness.
Bob was a graduate of Paynesville High School and St. Cloud State University with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree. He served as a biologist and area wildlife manager for the MN Department of Natural Resources for 34 years. Bob was especially proud of his naval service aboard the USS Des Moines in the mid 1950’s. He was involved with many conservation and sportsman’s clubs and an early supporter of Geese Unlimited and the MN Deer Hunter’s Association. His greatest joys in life were spending time outdoors hunting, fishing and bird watching. He loved spending time at deer camp and the cabin with family and friends.
He was united in marriage to Mary Reamer on Aug. 16, 1953 in Paynesville, Minn. She preceded him in death in 1978. On Sept. 17, 1983 he married Gayle Reading. Bob and Gayle had recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary.
Survivors include his wife Gayle Chesness; brothers, Jim (Toma) Chesness of Casa Grande Ariz., Chuck Chesness and sister Kathy Chesness both of Paynesville; sons David (Kathleen) Chesness, and Richard Chesness all of Grand Rapids; daughter, Paula (Rick) Gunderson of Elk River; stepchildren, Myra (Joe) Daley of Grand Rapids, Marcy (Barry) Miles of Falls Church Va., Julie (Nick) Renollet of Chisholm; grandchildren, Aaron Gunderson, Krislyn, Steven, Courtney, and Andrew Chesness, Alexander, Griffith and Xavier Miles, and Calan Renollet.
Our family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at Grand Itasca Hospital and Clinic. And a special thank you to care giver Roberta Warren.
VISITATION: 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, in Community Presbyterian Church followed by a service at 12 Noon. Reverend Kimbrel Johnson will officiate. Memorials preferred to Itasca Hospice Foundation.
