Daniel M. Overlie, 61 of Proctor, Minn., passed away on Friday, Dec. 27, at home with his wife Mary by his side; after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Dan was born on May 13, 1952 in Cloquet Minn., to Roy and Marietta Overlie.
After graduating from Denfeld High School in 1971 he moved to Detroit Michigan to work for General Motors. In 1977 he returned to Duluth and began working at American Hoist and Derrick until their closure in 1983. Dan worked various jobs until 1989 when he went to work for Hallett Dock Company – a job he enjoyed very much until his health forced him into early retirement in 2011.
He married his true love Mary in 1993 and again in 2011. His favorite days were those spent with his wife cruising around on his Harley “Howie”. He claimed these to be the two greatest joys of his life.
Dan is preceded in death by his infant children Lee Michael and Tammy Teresa in 1981; his father Roy Overlie in 1981; his mother Marietta in 1992; his sister Patricia Timmis in 2008; his sister-in-law Margaret “Margo” Overlie in 2012; his father-in-law Joseph Zmyslony in 2004; his sister-in-law Joanne Parker in 2009; his brother-in-law Brian Bijold in 2008 and his ever so faithful companion and pal – his dog Molly Emma in 2011.
He is survived by his wife Mary; his sons Deacon (Kelli) Overlie, Jesse (Ashley) Overlie; his greatest pride and joy, his grandsons Maccoy, Aiden and Max; his brother James “Jimmy” (Gail) Overlie; his cousin Mary Ann Jeannette; his brother-in-law James Timmis; his mother-in-law Elizabeth Zmyslony; sister-in-law Jeanet Bijold; brother-in-law Michael (Susan) Zmyslony; many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends and his lifelong best friend Robert “Bobby” Bogenholm along with his two little buddies, his cats Jack and Sam.
Mary would like to send a special heartfelt thank you to Hallett Dock Company and its employees for their continued support and visits during Dan’s entire illness, your kindness will never be forgotten. Additionally she would like to acknowledge the love and support shown by Dr. Baker, Bree and the entire staff at St. Luke’s Radiation/Oncology infusion center, you became like a second family in your tireless efforts to see Dan and I through this to the end, thank you will never be enough. And a very special thank you to the Hospice Staff whose weekly visits did more for us than we can ever express, special thanks to Stephanie for helping through the final days. Finally, to my immediate family; Elizabeth Zmyslony (Mom), Jeanet Bijold (sister); Michael Zmyslony (brother,) Jimmy and Gail Overlie, Deacon, Kelli and Jesse Overlie and Mary Ann Jeannette for your visits, support, love and tireless understanding and devotion during Dan’s illness. I couldn’t have made it through this without you.
VISITATION: 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. memorial service on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 in Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel 4100 Grand Ave. Duluth.
