EMMA MARIE (KORHONEN) SILAMPA
Emma Marie (Korhonen) Silampa, 74, of Moose Lake and a longtime resident of Kettle River, died Jan. 2, 2014, in Augustana Care Center in Moose Lake following a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Emma was born Dec. 11, 1939, in Moose Lake, to Edward and Ellen (Konu) Korhonen. She attended elementary school in Kettle River and graduated from Moose Lake High School in 1957. She attended beauty school and worked as a beautician for two years in Minneapolis.
In June of 1960, Emma received a ring in the mail from a young serviceman in Germany. His name was Richard Silampa, and they were married Aug. 25, 1962, in Minneapolis. Richard and Emma made their home on Richard’s grandparents’ farm where they lived, farmed and raised their family until August 2012.
In 1978, Emma began working in the kitchen at Moose Lake School. She went on to become the head cook and retired in 2000. Emma thoroughly enjoyed seeing the children every day and loved having the summers off. Gardening and feeding birds were her passions, second only to her family. She was very proud of her 10 grandchildren and never missed school programs, concerts or ball games.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Emma will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by Richard, her husband of 51 years; children Marie (Chris) Morse, Dean Silampa, Allison (Dennis) Horton and Tami (Joe) Godbout, all of Kettle River; grandchildren Jordan, Chelsea and Shelby Morse, Kyle, Naomi, Deidra and Mollie Horton and Emily, Sam and Reese Godbout; sister Mae (Bud) Vrana; brothers Dan Korhonen and John (Ginny) Korhonen; brother-in-law Carl (Edna) Silampa; sister-in-law Linda Silampa (Dale); her special companion, Perkkie; and many extended family and friends.
The family extends a very special heartfelt thanks to Naomi and the many caregivers who made it possible for Emma to remain at home as long as possible and to the staff of St. Croix Hospice for their compassionate care.
