LORIMER "LORM" EDWARD JOHNSONLorimer "Lorm" Edward Johnson, 94, of North Oaks, Minn.
Lorimer "Lorm" Edward Johnson, 94, of North Oaks, Minn., formerly of Virginia and Lake Vermilion, Minn., died on Monday, Dec. 30, 2013 at the Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
Lorimer was born on Feb. 20, 1919 in Duluth, the son of Swedish immigrant parents Gustav and Caroline (Hedstrom) Johnson.
He grew up with his four brothers in the Woodland area of Duluth, and he was a 1938 graduate of Central High School. Lorimer enlisted into the U.S. Army in the fall of 1941, serving as a Tech Sergeant in a weapons platoon in the Attu/Aleutian Campaign. It is remarkable all five Johnson boys served in the U.S. military during World War II. After 4.5 years of service, Lorimer was honorably discharged late in 1945. He earned his accounting degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth. He began his career with U.S. Steel/Oliver Iron Mining in Duluth in 1947.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Swanson on June 28, 1952 in Duluth. In 1964 he was transferred to U.S. Steel Purchasing Office in Chicago; after serving nine years there he was transferred as a Resident Purchasing Agent serving Minnesota Ore Operations/Minntac at Mt. Iron, Minn.
In 1983 after 35 years of service Lorimer decided to take retirement. After retiring, he kept busy in various capacities at the Presbyterian churches he belonged to, including Hope Presbyterian Church in Virginia, Minn., and Faith Presbyterian Church in Sun City, Ariz. He also loved to work with wood. Having built a cabin, garage and other buildings on Lake Vermilion he also built custom furniture for it. His favorite pastimes included fishing, playing golf and being with his family and his grand-daughters. Shirley and he were very fortunate to have spent many winters in Sun City, Ariz., and many summers where he truly cherished their cabin at Lake Vermilion. Lorimer will be remembered for his sense of humor, his integrity, his sharp mind and his loving nature.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Shirley of North Oaks, Minn.; his three children, Jan (Steve) McDaniels of Shoreview, Minn., David Johnson of Proctor, Minn., Lori (Kent) Cease of Park Rapids, Minn.; three adoring granddaughters, Lindsay, Katherine, and Jasmine; his sister-in-law, Donna (Arnold) Johnson of Duluth; his nieces and nephews, Bruce, Dean, Dale, Ron, Julie, Cindy, Brian and Barbara.
