Duluth’s first baby of 2014 arrived early — not just on New Year’s Day at 2:26 a.m., but about 11 weeks premature.
Blythe Thomas of Cloquet gave birth at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center to a baby girl who weighed just 1 pound, 14.7 ounces, and was only 13 inches long.
The baby was born after 28.8 weeks of pregnancy, the hospital reported Wednesday.
The as yet unnamed baby, mother and father, Steve Thomas, all are doing well, said ?Maureen Talarico, a spokeswoman for the hospital. The baby, the couple’s first child, is still in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Mary’s.
The family declined to be interviewed.
The first baby at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, Oren Johnson, arrived at 5 a.m., weighing 8 pounds. He is the first child for Mary Hanrahan and Brad Johnson of Duluth.
