Toivo Isaac Minkkinen, 92, of Duluth, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013 in Solvay Hospice House.
Toivo was born in Lawton, North Dakota on March 20, 1921 to George and Aina (Peterson) Minkkinen.
He entered the United States Army at age 21, serving four years in Berlin. He also was a member of the Red Ball Express, driving supplies, gas and equipment to the front lines. Toivo married Delores Huotari Minkkinen in 1952. After homesteading on the Gunflint Trail, Toivo worked mostly in construction and later for the city of Silver Bay. Toivo and Delores were married for 62 years and enjoyed their life together on the North Shore.
Toivo is survived by his wife of 62 years Delores; children, Darla (Mark) Fischer, Daniel (Debra), Denise (Robert) Weiss; grandchildren, Jennifer, David, Kristina, Danielle, Samuel, Kathryn and Kevin; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Ellen Grothe, LaVerna Field and Marilyn Anderson; brother John and many extended family members and friends.
GATHERING OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS: 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. memorial service on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 in Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel 4100 Grand Ave. Duluth.
