Wendell Arthur Hanson, age 85 of Grand Rapids, Minn, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013 in Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Grand Rapids.
Wendell was born in 1928 to Harold and Lillian Hanson in Grand Rapids, Minn where he grew up and attended school, graduating from Grand Rapids High School in 1946. He was united in marriage to Ernestine Hunt in 1949. Wendell proudly served during the Korean Conflict in Enterprise, Alabama and he continued his service in the National Guard in Grand Rapids, Minn. He was employed in various positions at Minnesota Power’s Coleraine office for 36 years and retired in 1986. Wendell was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran and current member of Calvary Chapel Northwoods. He was an avid traveler, family man and handy man.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Harold Hanson; sisters, Dorothy Valentine, Shirley Hanson and Norma Hanson.
Wendell is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ernestine “Erna”; daughters, Vicki J. Hanson of Hinckley, Minn, and Karen E. (Rob) Smith of Grand Rapids, Minn; sons, Steven A. (Sue) Hanson of Hernando, Fla, Kenneth E. (Kathy) Hanson of Stillwater, Minn, and Brian W. (Brenda) Hanson of Duluth; 7 grandchildren, Miriam R. Hanson of Duluth, Adam H.A. (Teresa) Hanson of Duluth, Kevin R. Hanson of Oakdale, Minn, Jeffrey K. Hanson of Roseville, Minn, Miranda J. Fierek of Bemidji, Minn, Alexander B. Hanson of Duluth, and Samantha J. Hanson of Duluth.
A GATHERING OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS: 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26th in Rowe Funeral Home and will continue 2 p.m. until the 3 p.m. Memorial Service Friday, Dec. 27th with full military honors, in Calvary Chapel Northwoods in Coleraine, Minn, (the Old Mary Immaculate Catholic Church). Rev. Wade Freshour will officiate. Burial will be in Itasca-Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Wendell’s memory can be made to Calvary Chapel Northwoods or Second Harvest Food Bank.
