A Duluth Christmas tradition dating back more than three decades will continue this week as VFW Post 137 hosts a free Christmas Eve dinner for people who might otherwise be alone for the holiday.
The dinner, co-sponsored by Midwest Communications, will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the VFW, 2023 W. Michigan St. It will include turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing, sweet potatoes, vegetables, cranberries, rolls, ice cream, cake and pie. People in attendance also will receive a gift.
Dozens of volunteers donate time to make the event happen, and many other local residents and businesses donate money, food and services. Among those providing help this year, Twig Bakery will cook the turkeys and Engwall’s Florist is donating poinsettias to decorate the tables.
Volunteers were slated to begin setting tables, wrapping gifts and preparing food — including peeling several hundred pounds of potatoes — this morning. The dinner was started by a committee at VFW Post 137 more than 35 years ago.
Brad Bennett, past post commander, said there may still be a need to volunteers to help with cleanup after the dinner on Tuesday afternoon. Anyone interested in helping out can call Bennett at (218) 310-8265.
