Officials in Northwestern Wisconsin are looking for volunteers to help make filing tax returns a little less taxing for area residents.
Training is set to begin this month for the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The IRS and the Northwest Wisconsin Community Services Agency are looking for volunteers to provide free tax help next year in Superior and Ashland.
“Last filing season, we prepared around 700 returns for more than $400,000 in refunds,” NWCSA Chief Executive Officer Millie Rounsville said in a news release. “That’s a big economic impact in our community. And it’s one reason this program is so important.”
The VITA program, along with a similar program called Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE), provides free tax preparation for people who need tax help but often can’t afford it. People with low-to-moderate incomes, senior citizens, people with disabilities and those with limited English skills usually qualify for the service.
Volunteers can serve as greeters, site coordinators or tax return preparers.
“When it comes to volunteering at a VITA site, everyone can help. No special skills are necessary,” IRS Wisconsin spokesman Christopher Miller said in a news release. “You can do something as simple as being a greeter, or if you’re interested, we’ll train you to prepare simple tax returns for other people using computer software. It’s people helping people. It’s that simple.”
VITA and TCE sites are generally open nights and weekends and the hours are flexible. Volunteers usually work for a minimum of a few hours a week between February and April.
