George Hakomaki of Burnsville, MN and a lifelong resident of Virginia, MN was born in Gilbert, MN in 1919. He graduated from Gilbert High School in 1939 and attended Eveleth Jr. College for two years before being accepted into the Army Air Corps Cadet training in Sept 1941. He was a WWII B26 pilot and member of the 442nd Bomb Squadron of the 320th Bomb Group, 12th Air Force. He flew 51 bombing missions over Italy before coming home on a hospital ship. After his WWII service, George remained in the in Air Force reserve, retiring as Lt. Colonel USAF in 1978. In his civilian life, he was a quality control supervisor for USX Minntac plant.
George was a lifetime member of many organizations, including the NRA, the Reserve Officers Assn., the Masons AAD Temple in Duluth and the VerSaba Shrine Club of Eveleth. George loved a walk in the woods with his beagles, no matter the season. He was also comfortable in the kitchen. He never bought a loaf of bread after he retired, baking his famous graham bread once a week. Family and friends were happy recipients of his pies and cookies.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; his parents, Isak and Lempi Hakomaki; and siblings, Minerva, Miriam and Howard.
George is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Blaine and Mary Beth of Burnsville; brother, Ray (Millie), sisters, Norma, Ruth and Helen. He also leaves many loving nephews and nieces and dear friends and neighbors. George endured the past two years of health challenges like a gentleman. He left us suddenly on Saturday, Dec. 14. We’ll miss his sense of humor and gentle spirit.
George’s family wishes to thank the nursing and care staff at St. Michael’s in Virginia and the Rivers in Burnsville. Their respect, compassion and thoughtful care will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Shriners Childrens Hospital or Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Virginia, MN.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1111 8th St., Virginia, MN with a gathering of family and friends 1 hour prior to funeral at church. Interment at Greenwood Cemetery, Virginia.
