The folks at Norton Park United Methodist Church are holding their 49th Wassail Bowl on Sunday, Dec. 8.
“Wassail is a special hot drink,” Kathy Moland told the Budgeteer. “‘Waes hael’ means ‘to be healthy.’” Moland is one of the organizers of the church’s event. “It’s a fun gathering to bring in the Advent season,”
The event will start at 6 p.m. with drinking wassail. A program starts at 6:30 p.m. which is scheduled to include a choir singing Christmas swing songs, a men’s four-part harmony choir singing “Holly Jolly Christmas,” “Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer,” and “Silent Night,” and violinist Karen Durfee.
The 8th-grade Sunday School class will perform a play titled, “The Wise Men Buy a Gift.”
“We get serious in the end and tell the Christmas story,” Moland said. Pastor Gary Gottfried is slated to read the Christmas story.
The program closes with all singing “Silent Night” while viewing a special candle display.
Christmas cookies and bread will be available in the Oscar Johnson Hall (downstairs) after the program.
The church is located at 436 N. 79th Ave. West in Duluth.
