School Board At-Large
I am running for the Duluth School Board as an at-large member because I have a passion for seeing that all children in our school district receive the quality education that they deserve.
Duluth schools do many wonderful things and we should celebrate the positives that are occurring. ISD 709 has come through some turbulent times with all of the changes to buildings, yet for the sake of our children and our future, we need to be able to come together as a community and set a positive path forward. It needs to be based on accountability, respect, and integrity. As someone with more than 25 years of experience in the community, I commit to having open dialogue with the community and board members to do this.
We also need to acknowledge the ways in which we are falling short as a district and community. The graduation rates for certain groups, particularly students of color, are abysmal. To address this, if elected, I will work to craft and pass a system-wide equity policy that will serve the interests of all students. In addition, I believe we need to hire more integration specialists to help the district handle the continuing demographic shift in our community.
Together, we can work to make Duluth public schools a model for the region and state. I humbly ask for your vote on November 5 so I can put my energy and experience to work. I also urge you to vote “Yes” twice for the school levy so that we can invest in our students and the future of our community with reduced class sizes, more elective courses, and curriculum improvements to meet changing employment opportunities.
