Van Vernon High, 86, of Ely, died peacefully surrounded by his family at the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely on Monday, Oct. 7, 2013.
Van was born on the family farm in Cotton, Minn., on Jan. 23, 1927 to Walfred and Esther (Peterson) High.
He graduated from Cotton High School in 1944 and immediately following graduation served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Japan. Upon honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, Van returned to Cotton and worked on the ore boats traveling the Great Lakes.
On Nov. 8, 1952 Van married the love of his life, Delores Marolt in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely. Van and Delores lived most of their lives together in Ely and raised their three children Rick, Jerry and Donna in Chandler Location. Van worked at Reserve Mining Company starting when production began in 1955 and was employed until its closure in 1986. For over 30 years, Van was co-owner of the Ely Speed Wash and enjoyed spending time having conversations with customers.
Van was known for his signature smile, kind heart and gentle ways. Whether deer hunting in Cotton or fishing on Stormy Lake, Van always enjoyed his time outdoors. In his retirement years, he was known as the friendly man who stocked shelves at Ely Northland Market. He also thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, attending their baseball, hockey, track and football games, music recitals and other school events.
Van was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, VFW Post 2717 and American Legion Post 248.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Delores and brothers, Leslie and Warren.
Van is survived by his children, Rick (Cheri) High of Eveleth, Jerry High and Donna (Jim) Richards of Ely; grandchildren, Erica and Ricky High, Alecia (Doug) Collins, Matt and Anya High, Jimmy (Alison), Jeff and Jordan Richards; four great-grandchildren; sister Eileen Carlson of Byron, Il; and special friend and caregiver De Ann Schatz.
SERVICE: 11 a.m. in St. Anthony’s Church in Ely, Minn., on Saturday, Oct. 12.
