John F. Simek, 84, of Kelsey, passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, in Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
John was born Dec. 31, 1928, to Stanley and Bessie (Bucha) Simek in Kelsey. He was a lifelong resident of Kelsey and attended schools in Kelsey and Cotton. John farmed, worked at Coons Pacific Mining, and also drove school bus for 32 years for the Cotton school. John married Violet Solem June 27, 1953, in Duluth, and made their home on the family farm where they raised their family.
He loved to deer hunt, watch his crops grow, and he especially loved his family Christmas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons Ronald and Roger; sister Agnes Nemec; and grandson Lee Heikkila.
John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Violet Simek; children Steve (Sandy) Simek, Gary (Elaine) Simek and Wendy (Terry) Saver, all of Kelsey; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 15 foster children; special foster sons Bruce Dagen and Todd Michaelson; brothers Frank (Alice) Simek of Chicago and Edward Simek of Bismarck, N.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 12 noon until the 1 p.m. memorial service Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the Kelsey Community Church. Rev. Wayne Bickford will be officiating. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery.
