Moya Joan Woods Kolar, 88, of Duluth, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital Hospice.
She was born March 12, 1925 in Omaha, Neb., to James Joseph and Janette Margaret (Jacobsen) Woods.
Joan was a 1947 graduate of St. Cloud Teacher’s College. Following her graduation, she married Frank Rudolph Kolar in Omaha on June 28, 1947. They lived in Virginia, Minn., prior to moving to Duluth. A Congdon Park resident since 1950, she was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church where she sang in the choir and belonged to many of the Ladies’ Circles. She was an active member of Birthright and worked at Carmel Heights. Joan was a Girl Scout leader for Troop 144, and the “neighborhood mom” to many children for over six decades. In the early 1970’s she returned to the teaching profession, working with special education students until her retirement.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Margaret Mary Woods; her daughter-in-law Denise Erickson Kolar; and her husband Frank.
Joan is survived by her children, Martha Ann Kolar Ives of Portland, Maine, Janette Helen (Stanley Hajduk) Kolar of Santa Cruz, Calif., Joseph James (Gerree Victoria DiMarco) Kolar of Eagan, Minn., and James Woods (Patricia) Kolar of Duluth; grandchildren, Lucas Rollin Augustus Ives, Jacobsen Leland Means Ives, Joan Irene Kolar, Catherine Margaret Kolar, Alison Joan Kolar, and Steven James Kolar.
VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 with prayers, in Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials directed to: The Richard M. Schulze American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, 2500 University Ave., SE, Minneapolis, Minn. 55414 would be appreciated.
