News Tribune, Sept. 5, 1973The Duluth City Council yesterday gave final approval to making all commercial zones eligible for liquor licensing except for Lakeside-Lester Park and an area within a one-mile radius of UMD’s Kirby Student Center. The change takes effect in 30 days.The Duluth Civil Service Commission voted yesterday to eliminate height requirements and reduce minimum age requirements from 21 to 18 for applicants for jobs with the Duluth Police Department. The maximum age for hiring remains at 30.
News Tribune, Sept. 5, 1993Cleveland-Cliffs officials said yesterday they have reached a settlement with the Steelworkers union in the month-old strike at Hibbing Taconite. But the president of the union local representing Hibbing Taconite employees said last evening that there was no agreement.Eleven federal and state health-care experts met last week in Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands away from telephones and other distractions to plan how to make health-care reform work for rural Americans. “The Apostle Islands Group” is expected to release its report this fall.
