Reader’s view: Unchecked capitalism spells the end of democracyBecause true democracy can stand in the way of corporate profits and control, it is under attack.

Whistleblowers go to prison and war criminals go free. Big Money operates above the law and its government stooges operate beyond the Constitution. Instead of addressing the concerns of protesters, protests are thwarted or outlawed and nonviolent activists are labeled “terrorists.” Tyrants and coups are supported abroad and voting rights are attacked at home. And trade agreements like the upcoming Trans Pacific Partnership allow corporations to override the laws of formerly sovereign nations.
Yet many Americans, among the most heavily propagandized people in history, still believe the official narrative that capitalism equals freedom, even as evidence of a burgeoning police state comes to light, and it becomes obvious the economy doesn’t work for working people.
What a sorry epitaph for this wonderful experiment: Rest in peace, democracy. We were too busy, ignorant and distracted to protect you, and now you’re gone. Sorry, kids.
