Harvey Churchill, 91, long time native of Duluth, passed on to Heaven from Naples, Fla., on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, where he had been living with his daughter Linda for 4 1/2 years.
Harvey Clifford Churchill was born March 4, 1922 in Duluth, to Samuel and Alice Churchill.
Residing in the Lakeside neighborhood, he enjoyed playing baseball, football and hockey while growing up. Harvey and his brothers all excelled in sports. When Harv was only 12 years old he was catching for a Duluth AA softball team, he also played hockey for Duluth Central where he attended high school.
Harvey served in the Army briefly then joined the CC Corp. He served locally in northern Minnesota and up the North Shore making environmental improvements. Returning to Duluth, he worked for Marshall Wells Hardware where he met and married Ethel Weiler. They stayed in Duluth and had three children. It was around this time that the Red Sox approached Harvey wanting him to sign on to catch for them. In those days playing professional sports didn't pay very well, so he declined and went into the elevator trade working for Otis Elevator Co., Johnson Elevator then Lagerquist Elevator Co. where he worked until his retirement in 1982. In his retirement Harvey cared for his mother and enjoyed golfing, fishing and playing cards. Family games of cribbage and croquet would get quite competitive and intense. Cards were by far his favorite, leading to several trips to Las Vegas with his friends.
Harvey was a consistently good-natured person, steady and caring, always there for his family. He was hard to beat as a caregiver, especially for the little ones. How many trips to the zoo with grandchildren this man made no one will ever know. He is loved and missed by many.
Harvey was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Churchill; mother, Alice (Starry) Churchill; former wife, Ethel (Weiler) Churchill; sister, Luella (Mel) Markstone of Bethany, Okla.; brothers: Allan (Beverly) Churchill and Robert (Liz) Churchill; niece, Terry Lee Churchill; and nephews, Tom Churchill and Tim Churchill.
Harvey is survived by his daughters, Sandra Churchill of Chesapeake Bay, Md., and Linda (Buck Schulte) of Naples, Fla.; son, Larry (Wendee) Churchill of Duluth, many loving nieces and nephews; six granddaughters, 11 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
