Rainy Lake Medical Center in International Falls is no longer in negotiations to become a hospital subsidiary of Essentia Health East, the center reported this week. The two groups had been in talks for months but ended discussions about completely integrating, and they have begun the process of discontinuing an affiliation first initiated in 2009.
“Rainy Lake Medical Center remains a strong, independent and community-minded hospital with an incredibly dedicated and skilled team of employees,” Susan Congrave said in a news release. She is the vice chairwoman of the hospital’s board of trustees. “The hospital’s board (members) feel strongly the International Falls community is best served by maintaining local ownership and control of our community hospital.”
The clinic in the city will remain part of Essentia.
Earlier this spring, Essentia proposed to integrate the hospital completely and acquire the facility’s assets. It would have become an affiliate of Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.
Officials from Essentia did not return requests from the News Tribune for comment.
