News Tribune, Aug. 13, 1973 The Douglas County Council on Alcoholism Services has reported the county is No. 1 in the state in the incidence of alcoholism. The council estimates 52 percent of the county’s population is affected by alcohol abuse, double the national standard. The eastern extension of I-35 would end at Eighth Avenue East if the volunteer efforts of the Duluth Rose Society are successful. Society officers announced yesterday they will not accept any of the proposed routes to extend I-35 to 26th Avenue East.
News Tribune, Aug. 13, 1993 Eveleth city councilors voted this week to close the acute care section of Eveleth Fitzgerald Community Hospital because of mounting financial losses. The 24-bed nursing home section and the four-station kidney dialysis unit will remain open. Max Patkin, the “Clown Prince of Baseball,” appears at Wade Stadium tonight as the Duluth-Superior Dukes take on the Sioux Falls Canaries. The rubber-faced Patkin, a former minor league pitcher, has been entertaining at ballparks for more than 45 years.
