A pair of Grammy winners will be performing Tuesday at the library.
Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing, also known as the Okee Dokee Brothers, will perform for the third time at the Duluth Public Library on the Library Plaza.
“They have a very engaging group personality and are lots and lots of fun to watch,” said Nancy Eaton, library community services staff.
The Minneapolis-based bluegrass group released “Can You Canoe?” in 2012, their fourth album. This February, it won the Grammy Award for the best children’s album.
“It was a huge surprise and a great experience to be honored. We just feel very lucky that that happened to us this year,” Mailander said.
“Can You Canoe?” was written after Mailander and Lansing spent 30 days canoeing the Mississippi River. Their next album, which will be released next May, is focused on hiking. They spent a month on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia, soaking up inspiration and filming for the DVD that accompanies every CD they release.
“We met a lot of great Appalachian musicians. The film took a nice direction with meeting old time mountain musicians and hearing their stories,” Mailander said.
As for their live show, the best description is fun.
“It’s an engaging show that incorporates volunteers, call-and-response, some actions and it’s based on participation. It’s a lot of fun,” Mailander said.
Their performance will wrap up the library’s Kaleidoscope program, an annual offering of free entertainment during the summer. Eaton estimates that 800-1,200 people have attended each Kaleidoscope show.
“There aren’t very many places where a family can take their kids and they don’t have to pay anything. We feel the library has filled his need very well,” she said.
Mailander said he hopes their songs encourage kids to take advantage of another version of free entertainment — the great outdoors.
“The whole end result should be an inspiration to get outdoors and get active with your family,” Mailander said.
