Jim Janousek of the Duluth Clean and Safe Team gave some information and advice on Duluth and how the team keeps the city safe and cared for at the latest Chamber Ambassadors meeting Tuesday.
Kirsten Bowman, director of events and retention for the Duluth area Chamber of Commerce, introduced Janousek as an experienced police officer and Duluth Clean and Safe manager for more than 30 years.
Janousek has been the operations manager for the Clean and Safe team since 2005. Before that he was a police officer for more than 20 years. He spoke at the luncheon to provide information and safety tips for those who work, shop and live in downtown Duluth.
“Duluth’s downtown is in very good condition compared to when I started working for the police force more than
30 years ago,” said Janousek. “I wouldn’t say it was neglected, but it is better cared for now ... not including the Last Place on Earth, of course.”
He explained that the Clean and Safe Team is a mid-range service between the public and the police.
If there are suspicious or unsafe circumstances and someone is hesitant about calling the police straightaway, the team will be there to check it out and decide whether or not to call the official authorities.
“If you come upon a situation that may do harm to yourself or others, skip the middleman (us) and call 911,” explained Janousek. “They do their job very well and they have many ways to communicate.”
Police computers keep track of how many calls come in for a certain location. If they get a certain number of calls in one certain area within a week, then that area becomes a problem area and is on their radar to watch out for.
Janousek explained that the police keep the town safe and what the Clean and Safe Team does is not only try to help with that, but to also keep Duluth looking good.
“We pick up trash, pick up litter, clean graffiti off the walls and really anything else to keep the town looking like an environment that somebody cares about,” said Janousek. “We clean up as much as we have to and we patrol the area, just to keep an eye on things.”
The team can do anything from clean up a mess on the street to escort a citizen home if they are uneasy about walking at night.
To get in contact with the Clean and Safe Team, call 218-727-8317 or 218-390-8899. Under any unsafe or dangerous circumstances, call 911 right away.
