A woman burned in a fire at a North Shore motel on Wednesday was reported in fair condition Thursday at a Duluth hospital.
Paula Hughes, an owner of the Lake Breeze Motel Resort at 9000 Congdon Blvd. in Duluth, was brought to Essentia Health Duluth after suffering burns in the fast-moving fire, which reportedly started with an explosion. She had earlier been reported in serious but stable condition, according to the Duluth Fire Department.
Hughes’ mother-in-law had minor injuries and wasn’t admitted to a hospital, Assistant Fire Chief Erik Simonson said.
He said the cause of the fire, which destroyed one of the motel’s buildings, has not yet been determined. The building that burned included the resort’s office, gift shop, sauna and two motel units.
