Judy Basgen Salyards, August 21, 1953 to June 30, 2013.
Our talented, funny, fierce and generous wife, mom, sister and aunt died suddenly early Sunday morning at her beloved Sunshine Lake. If you met Jude, you were her friend; if you met her twice, you were family. She was everyone’s favorite camp director and surrogate mom. She fed and sheltered generations of hockey and soccer athletes and never missed a Bulldog hockey game, carrying on her parents’ proud tradition.
Judy was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and a proud Gamma Phi Beta. She was the fourth of her family to be President of the Junior League of Duluth. The Anthropology/Sociology department at UMD will miss her organizational wizardry. In addition, she was a talented and accomplished seamstress and cook but she truly excelled as a hostess. Every day was an opportunity for a party and many days she took advantage.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Jean and Joan (Monaghan) Basgen. She is survived by her husband, Peter Salyards, her children, Ben (Kim), Becky, and Dan (Tanner O’Clair) Salyards. She is also survived by her siblings John (Norma) Basgen, Ann (Bob) Besinger, Fritz Basgen, Jean (Larry) Falk, Sue (Mike) Hayden and Liz (Tom) Chapman and by her sister-in-law, Martha (Jerry) Yeast, brothers-in-law, Ely Salyards (Catherine Pharis) and Bill (Co) Starkey. The list of nieces and nephews is long and loving. The list of loving friends is longer.
PLEASE JOIN THE FAMILY FOR A GATHERING: 2-4 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at UMD’s Kirby Student Center Ballroom, 1120 Kirby Drive, Parking Lot E (by library entrance) with time for reflections at 3 pm. Bring your memories and stories to share with Pete, Ben, Becky and Dan. Memorials can be sent to The Joan Basgen Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Essentia Foundation, 400 East 3rd Street, Duluth, MN 55805. Arrangments by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth, (218) 727-3555.
