Jeraldine “Jerry” Clairebel Martinek, 81, of Cloquet, died Saturday, June 29, 2013 in Sunnyside Health Care Center, Cloquet. She was born in Superior on September 24, 1931, the daughter of Alfred and Ida Knight. Jerry grew up in Morgan Park and was a 1949 graduate of Morgan Park High School. Jerry went through nurses training and worked in the Duluth hospitals and the St. Luke’s Infirmary until 1959. She then worked at Nopeming Nursing Home until her retirement. Jerry married Donald Martinek on November 1, 1950 in Kerrick.
She enjoyed snowmobiling and was a member of the Skifleas Snowmobile Club. Music was a large part of her home and Jerry also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, sewing clothes for her grandchildren, and spending time at the family cabin on Oak Lake. She would often travel with her husband to rock and craft shows and together they enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas where Jerry won several jackpots. As a nurse and if the occasion arose, Jerry would sometimes have to diagnose and “patch up” her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, on March 7, 2011; her parents; sister, June Knight; nephew, Jahn Vegar; and a brother-in-law, Farrell Peterson.
Jerry will be deeply missed by her daughter, Dawn (John) Cockburn of Cloquet; grandchildren, Sian (Christopher) Houle, Terrie Cockburn (Michael), and Tim Cockburn (Jen Krzewinski) all of Cloquet and Jesse (Teresa) Cockburn of Mt. Juliet, Tenn; great grandchildren, Taylor, Amelia, Otto and Cora; and sister, Jeannine Peterson of Duluth.
Jerry’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Kenneth Ripp, the staff of Sunnyside Health Care Center, and Chaplain Dennis Morreim for their compassionate and loving care each gave to her.
