District 197 is known for having a very strong delegation in Model United Nations. The program is sponsored by the YMCA’s Youth In Government sector. It is a national program, active in 40 states, that encourages political participation and activity, while also teaching about international relations and politics. Delegates represent certain countries, and research issues relevant to these countries and ultimately, in mid-March, represent the interests of their country at the conference. In addition to the debating, critical thinking and presenting, there are activities such as dances, a carnival, movies and a talent show.
This year, as always, Henry Sibley’s delegation was very involved in all parts of the conference. In all, twenty one Sibley students participated. They represented eight different countries and participated in various councils, committees, and court cases. Everyone participates in The General Assembly, but students who represented specific powerful countries participate in ECOSOC, The Security Council, The Human Rights Council, and the International Court of Justice.
