Duluth winter sand drop-off sites open

The city of Duluth reminds residents to not sweep the sand from their sidewalks, driveways or boulevards into city streets.
Instead, city officials ask residents to collect the dirt and grit and drop it off at one of the eight dump sites that Duluth Utility Operations has set up around Duluth.
The sand, if allowed to run down storm drains during the next spring rain, will choke the storm water system and run into local creeks and streams, often carrying pollutants along with each grain of sand. The excess sediment also can ruin trout habitat in the streams.
City crews sweep road sand off the streets as quickly as possible in the spring and any additional help from citizens is greatly appreciated. The collection sites are marked with black silt fencing at:
• 34th Ave. East and Valley Drive
• Chester Bowl parking lot
• Duluth Heights Community Club
• Lester Park parking lot
• Piedmont Community Center
• Stowe School
• Wheeler Field
• Woodland Community Center
