John Lawrence “Cracker Jack” Thrun, 82, of Proctor, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2013 in St. Luke’s Hospice.
John was born to Harvey and Julia (Oetterer) Thrun on Aug. 25, 1930 in Finlayson, Minn.
He graduated from Finlayson High School in 1948 and then attended St. John’s University for 1 ½ years. He served in the Army, 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper for two years. After returning from the service he worked for his father as a truck driver for Thrun Truck Line. He married his best friend RoseMarie Katchmark on Aug. 16, 1958. They lived in Duluth and Proctor and raised seven wonderful children. He retired from Hyman Freightways after 42 years and over three million miles driven!
He was proud to be a member of the Teamsters Local 346. John was a hard worker and a very good provider for his family. He retired in 1992. During his retirement he volunteered as a driver at St. Scholastica for 15 years. He also delivered Meals on Wheels in Proctor.
He and his wife enjoyed traveling with the Teamster Retirees Club taking many wonderful trips. He bowled in three leagues and enjoyed playing cribbage. He and his family spent many good times at the cabin, boating, fishing and hunting. He also loved to dance. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Proctor, the American Legion, and Knights of Columbus.
He is preceded in death by his parents and baby brother Frank.
John is survived by his loving wife, RoseMarie; three sons, Larry (Dawn) of Glenwood Springs, Colo., Dean of Proctor, Minn., and Dale (Sue) of Hermantown, Minn.; four daughters, Kathy (Cliff) Arseneau of Superior, Wis., Marie Hoder of Duluth, Carol (Matthew) Hanson of Saginaw, Minn., Rhonda (Scott) Isaacson of Stillwater, Minn.; 12 grandchildren, Andrea (Jason) Miller and Eric Skamarycz, Kendra, Kelcey, and KoriAnn Lee, Michelle, Melissa and Mathew Thrun, Myrandah and Travis Thrun, and Isabel and Johnathan Isaacson; two great-grandchildren, Joshua Nilsson and RoseMarie Miller; two brothers, Ted (Margie) of Sandstone, Minn.; Clarence (Charlotte) of New Brighton, Minn., as well as many extended family members and friends.
VISITATION: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013 in Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel 4100 Grand Ave. Duluth with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, April 26, 2013 in Holy Family Catholic Church, 2430 W. 3rd St., Duluth. Burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, 2nd floor, Bethesda, Maryland 20814.
