News Tribune, April 23, 1973 More than 5,500 people from Duluth’s 22 Catholic parishes gathered in the Duluth Arena yesterday morning to celebrate the Mass of the Resurrection. This is the second straight year that Duluth Catholics have staged the Easter Morning Mass in the Arena. Property Owners of Duluth Inc., a nonprofit organization made up of Duluth taxpayers, has voiced opposition to the state bill authorizing development of the Spirit Mountain Recreation Area in a letter to the bill’s author, Rep. Jack LaVoy of Duluth.
An agreement to close the Del Zotto landfill in Gary-New Duluth was approved yesterday in St. Louis County District Court. The agreement settles a lawsuit brought by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency that aimed to close the landfill. A whirlwind disrupted an Earth Day observance at the University of Wisconsin-Superior yesterday afternoon, injuring three people. UWS Public Safety Director Don Kernler said the wind was so strong it embedded a tent’s supporting pole four inches into a campus building’s roof.
