Helvi A. Mertel, 93, formerly of Winton, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at the Essentia Health - Virginia Care Center.
She was born Oct. 5, 1919 to Tuure and Emma (Korpiniemi) Aho in Winton.
She graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1937. After high school she worked as a nanny/housekeeper in Chicago for three years to WLS radio personality Martha Crayne.
Helvi married Joseph F. Mertel on Sept. 20, 1943 in Alexandria, Louisiana. Following her marriage she worked in California for two years for North American Aviation, where she was a “Rosie the Riveter” on P-51 Mustang planes.
Most of her life was lived in Winton until her move to Virginia six months ago. She began her career at the Winton Post Office as a clerk in 1946 and later was promoted to Postmaster, which she held until her retirement in 1982.
She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely and the former Winton Community and Garden Clubs. She loved her life in Winton and was always proud of her Finnish heritage.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Joseph and brother William (Charlotte) Aho.
She is survived by her son Joseph W. Mertel of Winton and daughter Mary Lou (Dennis) Feroni of Virginia, Minn.; granddaughter Christina (Brien) Lumppio of Duluth; brother-in-law Joe (Ginny) Smoley of Ely, and nieces and nephews.
MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: 11 a.m. Friday, April 19 in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely with visitation an hour earlier.
