Letter to the editor: Will lawmakers lower or raise pension payments?
This is in response to Rep. Erik Simonson’s column in the March 24 issue of the Budgeteer on the Opinion Page headlined, “Minnesota at a crossroads this legislative session.” He states “I am focused on tax reform that reduces property taxes.” In that light, currently there is a proposal before the legislature that increases what cities and counties pay into retirees’ police and fire pension funds. It increases those payments from 14.4 percent to 16.2 percent. However, there are alternatives proposing to lower those payments from 14.4 to 14 percent. Which of these two will Simonson pursue, to lower taxpayers’ payment, or to raise taxpayers’ payments?
