Thomas Olsen has been hired as a full-time reporter for the Duluth Budgeteer News.
If you regularly read the Budgeteer, you have probably already read his stories. He started contributing stories for the Budgeteer and the Lake County News-Chronicle in June as a freelance writer. In November he officially joined the Budgeteer as a part-time reporter.
The 2009 Denfeld graduate attended the University of Minnesota Duluth and graduated in December 2012 with a major in communication and a minor in journalism. Olsen worked on the UMD student newspaper, The Statesman. He covered the UMD hockey team for a year and a half. He also wrote stories about the team for the New York Times’ Slap Shot blog.
He said no two days at his job at the Budgeteer are the same. “I like being able to tell the stories of people in Duluth, Hermantown and Proctor. Community journalism isn’t just light, fluffy stories. We get to write about real issues affecting real people — and we as journalists get to bring those stories and issues to a broader audience.”
Besides his duties at the Budgeteer, Olsen will also contribute to the Lake County News-Chronicle and special supplements to the
Duluth News Tribune’s group of newspapers.
Olsen’s parents are Jill and Duane, and his older brother is Tim. They all live in Duluth.
