The Salvation Army is reporting that 2012 was a busy year for the organization’s food shelf and seeking donations to keep the shelves stocked.
Food needs have increased due in part to the ongoing effects of last June’s flood and some funding sources for food have been cut back or eliminated altogether, according to the nonprofit.
Food shelf use was up 45 percent over 2011 and nearly 45,000 meals were distributed last year, the organization reported. An additional 23,000 hot meals were served through the Salvation Army’s hot lunch program.
During the month of March, donations to the Salvation Army’s food shelf will be partially matched by Minnesota FoodShare and the Feinstein Foundation. The Salvation Army also works with local food banks and retailers to purchase food for less than retail cost.
Monetary donations or checks can be sent to the Salvation Army, 215 S 27th Ave. W., Duluth, MN, 55806, made online at salvationarmynorth.org/
duluth, or by phone at (218) 722-7934. Non-perishable food items can also be dropped off at the above address.
