Daniel Edward McDonald passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, one month short of his 82nd birthday.
Dan was born on April 8, 1931 in Duluth to Olga (Johnson) and John R. McDonald.
He lived most of his life in Midway Township, and graduated from Proctor High School in 1949. On May 12, 1952, Dan married Joane Leslie at Fort Belvoir, Va. He served in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953, and was stationed in Germany. Dan returned to his job with the DM&IR Railroad, and retired after 35 years as a supervisor in the Car shop at Proctor in 1985. He also worked as a carpenter on various other jobs. In retirement he rebuilt horse drawn wagons and pieces of antique furniture that were acquired during their travels.
Dan and Joane raised six daughters, all of whom enjoyed the love of horses that Dan had owned and kept for them. Dan was an outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing, horseback riding, hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, golf, and traveling. Dan’s illness, Lewy Body Disease, unfortunately prevented him from hiking enough trails, fishing enough streams, and more of the activities he loved including golfing with the Monday Couples League at the Pike Lake Golf Course.
Dan was a life member of Duluth VFW Post 137, American Legion Lind- Gordon-Berg Post 106 in Proctor, and served on the cemetery board at Augustana Lutheran Church of Midway Township where he was also baptized and confirmed.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents; brother Roderick and sister Rosemary.
He will be deeply missed by his family: wife Joane of 60 years; daughters Kathleen McDonald, Colleen and Vic Viebahn, Sheryl and Steve Johnson, Lynn McDonald, Jill and Keith Leiss, Debra (Rene) Hewitt; three grandsons, Matthew and Katie Seipel-Anderson with great grandson Willem, Daniel Anderson (Jennifer Mohn) and Phillip Anderson.
His Family wishes to thank the staffs at Edgewood Vista (the Lodge) and Diamond Willow (Arbor Rose) for their care the past 4½ years.
VISITATION: 9:30 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. funeral service on Saturday, March 16, 2013 in First Memorial Funeral Chapel 4100 Grand Ave. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. Services entrusted to First Memorial Funeral Chapel 624-5050
