Betty Mae Sobtzak, 77, longtime Coleraine resident, died on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013 in Grand Village, Grand Rapids.
She was born Feb. 10, 1936 in Taconite, she was the daughter of Emery and Grace (Gorrell) Hershberger.
Betty grew up in Taconite, was a 1954 graduate of Greenway High School, and had been a resident of Coleraine since her marriage to Edward Sobtzak on June 10, 1960. After graduation, Betty served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1957. Betty had worked in the Itasca County Sheriff’s department retiring after 15 years of service. Betty grew up with a talent for music and played piano professionally at the Rainbow Inn in Grand Rapids. Betty was diagnosed with Primary Lateral Sclerosis in 1985 and continued living at home in Coleraine until moving to Grand Village in 2005.
Her parents, Emery and Grace Hershberger and two sisters, Geraldine Donaldson and Jeanne Hershberger preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Ed; children, Linda (Scott) Wicklund of Golden Valley, Minn., Ken Sobtzak of Roseville, Minn., and Dan Sobtzak of Coon Rapids, Minn.; and four grandchildren, Andy, Erik, Abbie, and Natalie.
VISITATION: 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Funeral Mass on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 in the Mary Immaculate Catholic Church of Coleraine. Interment will be at the Lakeview Cemetery, Coleraine.
