Health Notes: Cyber abuse workshop

A workshop for parents, caregivers and professionals next month will focus on bullying online.

“Frenemies: Helping teens deal with cyber bullying and digital dating abuse” will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 5 at Amberwing, 615 Pecan Ave., following a social hour at 5:30.

The workshop, presented by Maude Dornfeld, community education coordinator for Safe Haven Shelter, will address ways to prevent and respond to cyber abuse.

The event is co-sponsored by the Miller-Dwan Foundation, Safe Haven and Essentia Health with financial support from the Verizon Foundation.

Lung disease widespread

A new report looks at a serious group of lung diseases in Minnesota.

“Scope of COPD in Minnesota” is about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

According to the report, which was a collaboration between the Minnesota Department of Health and the American Lung Association in Minnesota:

  • In 2011, 4.1 percent of Minnesota adults reported being told they had COPD. That translates to 164,000 people.

  • More than 79 percent of Minnesota adults with COPD are smokers or formerly smoked.

  • More than 44 percent of Minnesotans with COPD don’t take any medication for it, and about 35 percent still smoke.
