Flood coverage brings top honors to DNT news staff

The Duluth News Tribune’s coverage of severe flooding in the Northland last June received top honors for breaking news coverage and use of social media on Thursday at the annual Minnesota Newspaper Association convention in Bloomington.

The Duluth News Tribune’s coverage of severe flooding in the Northland last June received top honors for breaking news coverage and use of social media on Thursday at the annual Minnesota Newspaper Association convention in Bloomington.

Those were among seven first-place awards and 27 awards overall the paper received in the 2011-12 Better Newspaper Contest. That’s up from 15 awards received last year.

The entire News Tribune newsroom was honored for its breaking-news coverage of the record flooding. The newspaper’s social media presence during the flooding, led by multimedia editors Andrew Krueger and Jimmy Bellamy, also received first-place honors from the contest judges.

The News Tribune also received top honors for headline writing and for its website (duluthnewstribune.com). Editorial Page Editor Chuck Frederick was named best columnist, and Photo Editor Bob King won first place in the news photo category for his picture of a man smoking synthetic marijuana at Lake Place Park.

Reporter John Myers and former Investigations Editor Brandon Stahl were honored for best use of public records for their coverage of missed assessments in St. Louis County.

  • News photo: Bob King, second place for a photo of a car in a sinkhole during June’s flooding.

  • Public affairs reporting: Peter Passi, second place for coverage of Excelsior Energy

  • Portrait and personality photo: Clint Austin, second place for a portrait of two teens with cerebral palsy preparing for prom

  • Institutional advertisement: Roz Randorf and Kim Quinones, second and third place

  • Press photographer’s portfolio: Clint Austin, third place

  • Freedom of Information award: Brandon Stahl, third place for coverage of “The Case of Dr. Konasiewicz”

  • Explanation of newspaper operations: Robin Washington, third place for his column “Gauthier deserves empathy”

  • Innovative online advertising: Chad Curry, Mike Mazzio, Roz Randorf, Jon Godfrey and Kim Quinones, third place

  • Business story: Peter Passi, third place for coverage of Duluth tech company 50 Below.

  • Human interest story: John Lundy, third place for his story on John Unger and his dog, Schoep

  • Feature photo: Clint Austin, third place for his photo of lightning during Duluth’s Fourth of July fireworks

  • Best use of multimedia: Jon Godfrey, third place for an interactive timeline of the June flooding
