Health Notes: Radon test kits are free

Free radon-testing kits are available in Duluth.

Free radon-testing kits are available in Duluth.

Radon is an odorless, tasteless gas that can cause lung cancer and kills more than 21,000 people every year. Minnesota health officials estimate it’s present in two of every five Minnesota homes.

The Duluth Healthy Homes Partnership — which consists of the city of Duluth, the Duluth Public Housing Authority, the American Lung Association, the St. Louis County Public Health Department and other agencies — recommends testing for any home that hasn’t had a radon test within the past five years.

The test kits are available at:

  • 1Roof, Central Hillside Community Center, 12 E. Fourth St.

  • Ecolibrium3, 2304 W. Superior St.

  • American Red Cross, 2524 Maple Grove Road

  • Marshall Hardware, 4415 E. Superior St.

  • Caring Ways Cancer Resource Center, Essentia Health Duluth Clinic, 502 E. Second St.

  • American Lung Association in Minnesota, Room 202, Ordean Building, 424 W. Superior St.

    The kits are equipped with instructional materials. Group presentations also are available. Contact the American Lung Association at (218) 726-4721 to schedule one.
