  • A moratorium on the taking of eastern timber wolves was called for yesterday by a U.S. Department of the Interior official. The action is a victory for Minnesota conservationists who are opposing a state plan to allow hunting of wolves.

  • An early morning fire yesterday gutted the Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post 847 building at 1015 Tower Ave. in Superior. Fire officials aren’t sure what caused the fire in the building, which had housed the veterans’ club since the 1930s.

  • Duluth police have reported a 50 percent rise in check forgery complaints in the first 11 months of 1992. Representatives of Inter City Oil Co. say their Twin Ports convenience stores take in 50 to 60 forged checks a month.
