Health Notes: Dr. Steven Long named ‘Physician of the Year’ by local medical society

Dr. Steven Long of the Mount Royal Clinic has been named “Physician of the Year” by the Lake Superior Medical Society.

Dr. Steven Long of the Mount Royal Clinic has been named “Physician of the Year” by the Lake Superior Medical Society.

The award is given in recognition of “consistently demonstrating qualities recognized as defining excellence in medical-care delivery,” the medical society said in a news release. Long attended medical school at the Duluth and Minneapolis campuses of the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed his residency in internal medicine at Wausau Family Medicine Residency Program in Wisconsin. He has cared for patients at Mount Royal Clinic for the past five years.

The medical society announced the following additional awards:

  • Dr. Jay Parker, Essentia Health, the Thomas A. Stolee Exceptional Dedication to the Practice of Medicine Award, given to a member physician who has demonstrated a lifetime of exceptional dedication to the practice of medicine.

  • Dr. Kenneth Ripp, Raiter Clinic, the John B. Sanford Community Service Award, given to a member physician who has demonstrated exemplary service to the community through extensive volunteer activities outside the field of medicine.

  • Heather Opsahl, the medical society’s executive director, the President’s Award, given in recognition of personal, professional and community contributions to our profession.

  • Dr. Randy Rice, Gateway Family Health Clinic, the Elizabeth C. Bagley Merit Award, given in recognition of commitment to the medical profession and the Lake Superior Medical Society.

  • Dr. Deborah Ralston, Duluth Internal Medicine Associates, the Educator Award, given in recognition of excellence in teaching and education.

  • Dr. Charles Gessert, Essentia Institute of Rural Health, the Arthur Aufderheide Scientific Award, given in recognition of outstanding scientific achievements.

  • Dr. George Apostolou, Duluth Internal Medicine Associates, the 2012 LSMS President’s Gavel Plaque, in appreciation of outstanding leadership and commitment to the medical society.

    Meanwhile, Long also has been nominated for the 2013 Minnesota Family Physician of the Year Award, the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians announced. As many as four finalists will be chosen from among the nominees. The academy will accept additional information and letters about Dr. Long until Jan. 15.     The Essentia Health Foundation has put together a “wish list” to help young patients who receive care through Essentia Health Children’s Services.

  • Gas cards for families traveling long distances for care — $150.

    Minnesota Lt. Gov. Yvonne Prettner Solon will be one of the guests on this week’s “Speak Your Mind” at 7:30 this evening on PBS North (channels 8.1 and 31.1).

    The half-hour show, on the topic “Myths about Mental Illness,” also will feature Casey Ladd, director of Child and Family Services at the Human Development Center, and host Dr. Carolyn Phelps.

    Prettner Solon is a retired clinical psychologist.

    “Speak Your Mind” follows “Doctors on Call” at 7 p.m. This week’s program, hosted by Dr. Ray Christensen, is on the topic of “Healthy Living and Seeking Balance.”
