Virgil D. Varnes, 87, of Superior, passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 at Golden Living Center.

Virgil D. Varnes, 87, of Superior, passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 at Golden Living Center.

He was born Nov. 8, 1925 in Minneapolis to Peter and Esther (Johnson) Varnes.

Virgil served his country in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marines Reserve. He worked as a crane operator for U.S. Steel in Duluth and enjoyed farming, music, visiting with people, and especially his dog, Josie.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; and several siblings.

He is survived by his wife, Annamae; one daughter, Lucinda Young of Hope Mills, N.C.; one step-son, Steven VanGuilder of South Shore, S.D.; one step-daughter, Jodi (Royce McKinnon) Kujawa of Superior; two brothers, Ervin (Marilyn) Varnes of Burmingham, Ala., and Duane (Sandy) Pionk of Superior; four sisters, Lou Edin of Minneapolis, Kathy (Bill) Smith of Robbinsdale, Minn., Audrey (Vern) Rustad of Wrenshall, and Erma Ketchmark of Minneapolis; six grandchildren, Rachael, Brittani, Kasey, Jordan, Brody and Tahlor; and numerous nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 12 Noon Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 until the 1 p.m. memorial service in Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. Military Honors will be presented by the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 of Carlton, followed with refreshments in the fellowship room. See the family online guest book at www.nelsonfuneralcare.net
