Olaf A. Ness, 92, of Avondale Street, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2012.
He was born in Norway on July 11, 1920, to Olaf J. and J. Matilda (Mellingen) Ness. Olaf worked in the CCC Camp 3709 at Seagull Lake on the Gunflint Trail. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and became a U.S. citizen while stationed in England. He married Alice Gilbertson on Nov. 15, 1946, in Duluth. They had five daughters, “the Ness girls”, 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Olaf worked for Minnesota Power for 29 years, retiring as a welder and shop foreman in 1983.
He loved spending time with his grandchildren, hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, a loyal and respected man and will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; a brother, John Ness; and a sister, Merry Hendrickson.
Olaf is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and Larry Bubacz and Dairlyn and Lanny Gower, all of Duluth, Jeanette and Jim Johnson of Hastings, Minn., Helene and Tom Pavlowich of Spearfish, S.D., and Lisa and Rob Hudson of Prescott, Wis.; grandchildren Shane (Amy) Bubacz, Anne (Greg) Hamann, Jill (Jeremy) Magnuson, Christopher Gower, Jason Johnson, Jaime Hansen, Tyler Pavlowich, Peter (Lindsey) Pavlowich, Katie Hudson and Ryan Elmquist; great-grandchildren, Spencer, Grace, Zachary, Luke, Skye, Treyton, Austin, Adelin and AliceN; a sister, Irene Lundquist; a brother, Harold (Jeanne) Ness; a brother-in-law, Vernon (Lee) Gilbertson; many nieces and nephews; and good friend, Jerry Jackson.
VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, in Williams Lobermeier Boettcher Funeral Home and continues from 12 noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service Wednesday, Dec. 19, in Faith Lutheran Church. 1814 N. 51st Ave. E. Pastor Sam Kautz officiating. Burial at Forest Hill Cemetery.
