• UPDATE: Mix of precipitation moving across the Northland today

State officials are advising no travel on some Northland highways today as a mix of rain, sleet, freezing rain and snow affects the region.

As of midday, highways west of Grand Rapids - including U.S. Highway 2 between Grand Rapids and Bemidji - were reported to be icy, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation and Minnesota State Patrol were advising no travel.

Parts of Minnesota highways 6, 46, 200 and 371, and U.S. Highway 71, also were included in the no-travel advisory.

Difficult driving conditions are reported south of Grand Rapids toward the Brainerd area. Interstate 35 between Duluth and the Twin Cities, and highways on the Iron Range, are reported to be in fair driving condition, with icy patches.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is reporting ice-covered highways in Northwestern Wisconsin, including highways 2, 35 and 53 east and south of Superior.

Rain is changing over to sleet and snow in the Duluth area as of midday. Some other Northland locations have seen freezing rain so far today; weather spotters reported a glaze of ice on untreated surfaces in the Grand Rapids and Brainerd areas earlier today, with up to a quarter-inch of ice accumulation reported by a weather spotter near Leader in Cass County.
