Unity High School students team up for blankets
The 62 students of the Duluth school district’s Unity High School did more of what they’ve been doing all year on Friday: giving of themselves as a way to grow together. Unity students team up for blankets
The 62 students of the Duluth school district’s Unity High School did more of what they’ve been doing all year on Friday: giving of themselves as a way to grow together.
After running a blanket drive, students spent part of the day making tie-blankets to deliver to CHUM, “adopted families” and Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center. Students made 120 pies for Union Gospel Mission for Thanksgiving and have done other service projects this year.
“I’ve been homeless before so it means a lot to me to be able to help other people who’ve been in the same situation I have,” said senior Justice Lundquist, president of the school’s student council.
The students have bonded through the projects, said teacher Wendy Tresi, and have learned how good it feels to help others.
“I have seen new friendships develop,” she said. “Even kids resistant to doing things. As long as they’re here today they feel the energy, and it takes them a step closer to being a part of it.”
Students attend Unity either by their own choice or by recommendation of school counselors for students who would do better in a smaller environment.
