JOHN POWELL 'J.P.' LAFFERTY JR.

John Powell “J.P.” Lafferty, Jr., 88, of Duluth, formerly of Waukegan, Ill.,, passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012 in his home at Diamond Willow.

John Powell “J.P.” Lafferty, Jr., 88, of Duluth, formerly of Waukegan, Ill.,, passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012 in his home at Diamond Willow.

He was born March 10, 1924 in St. Louis, Missouri to John P. and Nellie Lafferty, Sr.

J.P. served in the U.S. Marines in the Pacific, during World War II. He was a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio receiving a Bachelors Degree in Psychology. While in college, J.P. met Dorothy Anne Staley, whom he later married. J.P. worked for Nation Wide Insurance for 35 years, retiring as the District Claims Manager in Waukegan.

J.P. was involved in the Coast Guard as an Auxiliary Instructor. He was an active sailor, rower and member of the Waukegan Yacht Club. Other activities he enjoyed were racquetball, weight lifting, handball and in his later years, he was a “super fan” of watching his grandchildren play sports. J.P. was an avid animal lover, especially of the many dogs he enjoyed as pets, over the years.

J.P. was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Robert.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Anne; children, Elizabeth (Michael) Kaliner of West Chester, Penn., Barbara (Patrick) Ferrari of Glen Carbon, Ill., and John P. “Jack” (Laura) Lafferty of Duluth; seven grandchildren, Kate (Justin) Witman, Rachel Kaliner, Ben Kaliner, Joe Kaliner, John P. Lafferty, IV, Francesca Ferrari and Faye Lafferty.

The Lafferty family would like to extend a special “thank you” to the staff at Diamond Willow in gratitude for their compassionate care of J.P. during the final phase of his life.

PRIVATE FAMILY MEMORIAL SERVICE: will be held.
