Funeral services have been set for Duluth school district official Vance Hopkins Jr., who died during routine outpatient surgery on Wednesday.
Hopkins, 61, the assistant principal at Ordean East Middle School, was undergoing an angioplasty when complications developed and he died suddenly, said his son, Vance Hopkins III, on Saturday.
The News Tribune reported on Friday that Hopkins had diabetes and high blood pressure. Although his father did have those conditions, the newspaper report led some people to jump to the conclusion that his father had died of a heart attack, Hopkins III said. His father also had an enlarged heart, and the angioplasty had been scheduled as a checkup for that condition, Hopkins III said.
Services for Hopkins, who worked at several Duluth schools during his career, will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 2430 W. Third St.
A celebration of life will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, visitation from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday and funeral services at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Flowers can be sent to Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Trunk Highway in Hermantown. A complete obituary will run in Sunday's print edition of the News Tribune.
